What Is a Contention Ratio and Why Does It Affect Your Speed?

What Is a Contention Ratio and Why Does It Affect Your Speed?

You've seen the term on our package pages. Here's what contention ratio actually means for your daily browsing, streaming, and video calls.

When you sign up for a fiber internet package, bandwidth is shared among users on the same node. This sharing ratio is what ISPs call the contention ratio.

A contention ratio of 1:1 means you get the full advertised speed all to yourself, all the time — ideal for businesses and power users. A ratio of 4:1 means up to four users share the same bandwidth pool at peak times.

At Optinet, our home packages run on low contention ratios. We deliberately over-provision capacity on each OLT to keep real-world speeds close to what you are paying for. If you are experiencing slowdowns in the evening, upgrading to a lower-contention package is usually the fix. Call us and we will recommend the right plan.
