Kenya's power grid is what it is. Outages happen — sometimes for an hour, sometimes for the whole evening. The good news: keeping your internet alive through a blackout is cheap and easy.
When the lights go out, your internet stays on.
Your router and ONT together draw very little power — usually less than 20 watts combined. A small uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or a 12V battery backup can keep them running for 4–8 hours on a full charge.
What to look for:
- A 600VA–1000VA UPS from any electronics shop in town (KES 5,000–9,000). Plug your router and ONT into it. Done.
- Or a mini DC UPS built specifically for routers (KES 2,500–4,000). Smaller, lasts longer because it skips the AC inversion.
Either option pays for itself the first time you stay online during a blackout while everyone else is doom-scrolling on mobile data. If you're not sure what to buy, ask our support team — we've helped dozens of clients pick the right one.
