More Kenyans than ever are working from home, and a reliable internet connection is not optional — it is infrastructure. If your fiber line is solid but your video calls still stutter, the culprit is usually your router settings, not the line itself.
1. Enable QoS (Quality of Service)
QoS lets your router prioritise video call traffic over downloads. Most routers have this under Advanced > QoS. Set video conferencing apps to highest priority.
2. Use the 5 GHz Band
Switch your work laptop to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. It is faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz, especially in areas with many neighbouring networks.
3. Position Your Router Centrally
Walls and floors cut Wi-Fi signal significantly. Place the router as central and elevated as possible, away from microwaves and cordless phones.
4. Keep Firmware Updated
Router manufacturers regularly push performance and security improvements. Check for firmware updates every few months in your router admin panel.
5. Reboot Weekly
A simple weekly reboot clears memory and refreshes your connection. It takes 60 seconds and can noticeably improve performance.
